Aus Massachusetts Teen Beat In The 1960s

Prolific label from New Bedford that released quite a few Teen Beat 45s. Owned by Carl German.

Arco Recording (operating as Stereophonics Corp.) was a major independent recording facility and record label based at 403 Rivet Street in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Active throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, it served as the commercial and creative hub for the South Coast region’s booming regional music scene.

Unlike many makeshift local studios of the era, the Stereophonics Corp. facility was a heavily equipped, professional-tier space listed in national trade publications like Billboard. The main tracking room was quite large (40 by 50 feet), giving it the capacity to hold up to 55 musicians at once. It featured custom echo chambers and built-in facilities for live music tracking and film mixing.

The studio was managed by P.J. Bonfils, while Carl German served as the chief recording engineer and house bass player.

By 1970, the control room housed a custom 16-input console alongside advanced multi-track hardware, including Scully 8-track and 4-track recorders and high-end Neumann and AKG microphones. They even operated a remote 4-track mobile recording van for location tracking.

The studio operated its own regional imprint, Arco Records. It captured a massive swath of local history and genres.

Non-Teenbeat 45s

  • 106 : Good but tame R&B dancer or rocker, basic instrumentation.
  • 2120 : Nice folky ballads, male/female duo. The corny male voice ruins what could have been a good folk pop record.
