Astor
Label from Cambridge that was mainly an outlet for the Bugs, but also had a release for Sammy Spear's son Leigh. Sammy was Jackie Gleason's musical director. Vice president of Astor was Sam Cammarata.
Astor's founder was a local Boston music producer and booking agent named Joe Melino, who named the label after the Astor Motor Inn. Melino and his business partner had recently rented out an office space inside the motel to run their operations.
Before launching Astor Records, Joe Melino ran Polaris Records. After sponsoring a statewide "Battle of the Bands" competition in 1966 that suffered from terrible attendance and financial losses, Melino dropped the Polaris label entirely.
